Used in China for weaving, crafts, fishing rods, and mid-season (bitter-free shoots, this 25' tall runner (unless contained) forms a narrow crown. S/M
Phyllostachys angusta is one of our favorite small hedge species because it forms dense screens with low branching and is also easy to keep green and healthy. It is similar in growth, shape, and habit to Phyllostachys aurea (Golden Bamboo), but with much denser and greener looking foliage - Golden Bamboo's leaves tends to yellow easier than any other Phyllostachys. Phyllostachys angusta has very strong wood and the culm walls are thick, making the canes very useful for garden projects. We've started using the canes for hoop houses that hold up to wind much better than other building materials. The strong canes also causes this species to be very upright, even with large amounts of snow or ice in the canopy. Canes that do bend under weight very rarely break and almost always spring back into a fully upright stature after the thaw. Our stand is planted next to several other Phyllostachys including vivax, nigra, nigra 'Bory', nigra 'Henon', and glauca 'Yunzhu' and with six inches of wet snow ever grove leaned nearly to the ground except for angusta, which remained straight.

Phyllostachys angusta has straight green leaves with straight green canes and no interesting coloration except for the shoots, which have a striped creamy sheath.
