Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the best blue-leaved types, a ?good, hardy plant with bold gray-green leaves? (G. S. Thomas); fine lilac-colored flowers of good size and quality held well above the leaves. Sh-PSh/M
Hostas are one of the most popular perennials for shade and bring an incredibly beautiful array of color to any garden. In early to mid-summer, spikes grow from the center of each crown which produce large trumpet shaped blooms for up to a month. 'Hyacinthina' has medium sized dark green leaves and more beautiful flowers than most other Hosta varieties.

Plant your hosta in areas with well drained soil. If your soil does not drain well, consider adding five or six inches of topsoil or compost to form a raised bed and planting in that. Fertilize in early spring as the new shoots are beginning to emerge from the ground to encourage strong growth. If you have problems with slugs, plant your Hostas a little farther away from other plants (around 18 inches away) and add shredded bark mulch each year to discourage slug travel.
