Blue mophead hydrangea, very cold hardy

By: Nasketucket Gardens

Dirr collected this in Coach Vince Dooley's back yard (cheaper than a trip to China?); its a frost resistant variety with little or no tip dieback and robust clusters of blue or pink flowers depending on soil pH. We suspect its been previously circulated under a different cultivar name but if Dirr couldn't put a name to it, we won't even attempt to.
Known to bloom on new wood and old wood. This wonderful hydrangea was found blooming in the backyard of University of Georgia Coach Dooley by renowned horticulturist and hydrangea lover Dr. Michael Dirr after a cold winter that left most hydrangeas bloomless. We've grown it for several years and we get blooms every year without fail. The blooms can be blue or pink depending on the acidity of the soil. It is a strong and vigorous growing hydrangea that we have seen bloom twice in one season.
The only Hydrangea with flower buds hardy enough to survive Georgia' s 1996 devastating freeze, 'Dooley'(developed by Dr.Michael Dirr) produced its blue-acid/pink-alk flowers profusely even that year. PSh/Med
