Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Developed in Europe as an orchard plant, this award-winning 3-6' shrub offers not only earlier fragrant spring flowers, but also glossy summer foliage, superb red fall color and large persistent black berries. S/M-W
Grown for its healthful benefits, Aronia 'Viking' is a 'superfruit" that boosts your body's immune system to combat stress-related diseases. Aronia berries have extremely high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C; in fact the anthocyanin levels are among the highest recorded. Easy-to-grow, this multi-stemmed deciduous shrub has clusters of white flowers that appear in May followed by large violet-black berries that ripen in late summer. The foliage turns an attractive red color in fall. 'Viking' is a self-fertile variety that's a prolific fruiter. Berries are usually made into juice (mixed with apple juice for sweetness), teas, jams, wine or syrup. Grow in full sun.
Somewhat smaller bush than Nero but the same large clusters of fruit.
This Award-Winning shrub was developed in Europe as an orchard plant but a gardener couldn't ask for more in a shrub for the border: Masses of fragrant white spring flowers, earlier than the species, glossy summer foliage, gorgeous red fall foliage and extra-large 3/4", persistent purplish black berries (used like currants) for the orchard or for the birds, often lasting 'til spring when robins eat them! Well, gosh, did we miss anything? :-) Oh, yeah, while spreading by suckers, not invasive.
