A tetraploid sport of H. 'Kabitan', 'First Mate displays improved vigor, more pronounced variegation, and a more upright habit than 'Kabitan'. It has long, narrow leaves with dark green, heavily rippled margins and gold centers that lighten to cream. Lavender flowers appear on 24" scapes in late summer.
