Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A medium-sized timber bamboo with strong canes and thick culm walls. The shoots initially grow as green but over time turn a light gray color. Unlike Phyllostachys vivax, 'Henon' tends to grow upright and straight even in low light conditions which allows for better construction uses. The dense wood is less susceptible to splitting than other species.

Although it is named as a variety to Phyllostachys nigra, 'Henon' is believed to be the true species to black bamboo. Most varieties of black have dark browns and black either in stripes, spots or covering the entire culm. 'Henon' is one of the few that does not have any of these dark color characteristics.
The mother of all Black Bamboo is grey, or gray if you go that way. If I did, I’d probably live in this blue bamboo all day and night. to 65’
A cold hardy bamboo good to 0 F. A green form of Black bamboo that grows much larger with the older culms having a greenish-blue color. Excellent wood quality.

This variety does not have the color markings on the green culms and branches. The young shoots can be used as vegetables and the culms used for weaving as well as construction. This classic runner reaches upwards of 30' once well-established.
