Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Phyllostachys rubromarginata or Red Shoot/Red Sheath Bamboo has very strong canes with thick walls and dense growth, making it one of the best choices for a windbreak. The cane diameter is thin relative to its height, with 60 foot tall groves often supported on canes only two or three inches in diameter. Species such as Phyllostachys vivax would have cane diameters of five or six inches for the same height. This is possible because of the much greater strength of Phyllostachys rubromarginata, which is a fantastic choice for cane harvest because there is almost no taper for the majority of the culm length and the nodes are spaced far apart.
Plants are fast to establish and P. rubromarginata is known to be one of the most prolific shooters. Plants can easily be kept smaller and we have maintained a lovely hedge at our nursery with plants spaced about seven feet apart and growing to fifteen feet tall. To keep bamboo plants shorter, simply harvest the largest shoots in the spring and leave the smaller shoots. Plus, the shoots you harvest are delicious - read about harvesting bamboo shoots and cooking them.

Propagating Phyllostachys rubromarginata/Red Shoot Bamboo
Propagate running bamboo by digging up clumps in the early spring and topping the canes to half their height, or by rhizome cuttings.

Containing Running Bamboos
Red Shoot Bamboo is a running species, which means that rhizomes travel horizontally underground and pop up new shoots away from the grove. These plants can be easily contained by growing them in large containers or by using barrier methods, read about containing running bamboo.
Another happy karate chop to my jaw-bone of bamboo-love came when I saw groves of this bamboo in Louisiana. to 65’
This variety is a good choice for screening as it grows with very full and lush foliage. As all of the larger bamboos, it is good for crafts. This cultivar is reported to be more cold tolerant than others going to -10° to -15°. The new edible shoots have small red margins.
