Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Phyllostachys dulcis, or Sweetshoot Bamboo, is considered to be one of the best choices for producing large timber poles and delicious edible shoots at the same time. Sweetshoot is often planted for commercial shoot harvest and is commonly grown at households in Japan and China for personal harvest. Shooting season is early.
Similar to Phyllostachys vivax, Phyllostachys dulcis has thick canes relative to its height and so is a good choice for making an ornamental timber grove. It will produce large sized canes even in limited planting areas, and can reach heights of 35 feet tall in an enclosed area about five feet in diameter.

Occasionally, canes will be striped with cream banding on the lower portions providing for even greater ornamental appeal up close. The shoots are similarly banded with cream colored stripes and pairs well with dark colored perennials planted around the edge of the grove.

The masses of large drooping leaves, the thick culms, and a white ring at the node make this one of our most beautiful bamboos. Phyllostachys dulcis will occasionally display cream-colored stripes on its culms.
Growing to 40' with a 2¾" diameter, this variety has a white ring at the nodes and sometimes shows cream stripping of the culms.
