Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Phyllostachys decora, or Beautiful Bamboo, has strong and very straight stems and dense foliage. The new shoots are very colorful and striped with cream and surrounded with mixes of reds, greens, and purples. The canes will two or three inches in diameter and plants can grow to anywhere between 25 and 35 feet tall. Plants will grow taller in better soil and shorter in worse soil.
Phyllostachys decora is fantastic for hedges and screens and takes to pruning very well. The canes are upright and are more resistant to snow damage than other species. To keep bamboo plants shorter, simply harvest the largest shoots in the spring and leave the smaller shoots. Plus, the shoots you harvest are delicious - read about harvesting bamboo shoots and cooking them. Phyllostachys decora is also sometimes known as Phyllostachys mannii 'Decora'.

Propagating Phyllostachys decora/Beautiful Bamboo

Containing Running Bamboos

Our skill at noticing fine details that make one beautiful thing more beautiful-than-the-other is natural. Decora is one beautiful being! to 35’
A very aggressive runner with 2" stalks that will grow to 30' and will grow in about any location. The clums on mature plants are broader than most and are dark purple to pale green, very attractive.
