    This superb, upright columnar tree has appeared in classic Mediterranean gardens (and so its paintings) since the time of the Renaissance. Commonly used as a screen, this 40-60', and sometimes taller, tree features dark-green scale-like leaves on vertical branches. Introduced from the mountains of Iran into Italy long before such things were recorded and is now a common sight throughout the Mediterranean or places such as California that share its climate. S/M
