Huge, pink, feathery clusters of 'smoke' flowers in summer contrast beautifully with the dark leaves of this 12-15' shrub/tree ,in spring the foliage emerges red before deepening to dark-plum, its fiery orange-red fall color is spectacular as well; the fine results of this cross between 'Velvet Cloak' and the native Cotinus obovatus. S/M-D
Cotinus 'Grace' is one of our best discoveries. We first listed C. 'Grace' in 1993, and are still impressed with how great this shrub can be. We got this Hillier named hybrid in the mid 1980's as a one-foot cutting. Our original plant is cut back hard each spring to 6' and by the end of the season is 12-14' high. The large mid purple leaves are pretty all summer, and by fall they turn the most amazing pink, red, orange and purple. As a cut back plant we get only a few flowers (no great loss) but the foliage is superb.
Large shrub or small tree, with deep-blue green foliage. Leaves are light red when young, and fall color is brilliant red, orange and yellow. The pink flowers are held on large panicles. Growth Rate fast, 12"+ annually
A hybrid of the purple leaved cultivar 'Velvet Cloak' and the American Smoketree, Cotinus Obovatus. It is vigorous, fast growing and showy. Exceptionally large flower plumes and wonderful fall color.

A very useful shrub with foliage emerging light red, maturing to a deep wine purple and then giving way to rich scarlet fall colour. The name smoke bush comes from the smokey haze of the flowers as they cover the plant in summer. Prune to maintain desired size. Can be pruned into a standard (tree) shape.
An arresting beacon as the sun casts a ruby glow through its purple-black leaves, 'Grace' inherits her elegance from Cotinus coggygria 'Velvet Cloak' and Cotinus obovatus. The sprays of tiny deep pink flowers throw a smoky, wine-colored fog over its robust form, and a close glance reveals bright yellow at the center of each bloom. Lovely in contrast with the silver foliage of Teucrium fruticans (Select Form), 'Grace' conveys a stately presence matched by few other plants.
Hybrid of the purple-leaved cultivar 'Velvet Cloak' and American Smoketree. Vigorous in the nursery, it flashes exceptional fall color.
A cross between Cotinus coggygria 'Velvet Cloak' and Cotinus obovatus made in 1978 by Peter Dummer of Hillier Nurseries. 'Grace' is a spectacular thing (named for Dummer's wife) with massive pink flower panicles 14?h x 11?w. Leaves are 6? long emerging light red in spring and darkening to blue green in summer finally turning red orange and yellow in fall. Mature height will probably be 20'+, in terms of overall appearance it resembles C. obovatus; cuttings are a royal pain to root.
A red leafed form of American Smoke Tree.
This is a cross between the native smoke tree (Cotinus obovatus) and the red leaf form of the Asian smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria). It contains the best of both worlds, and the biggest maroon puffs of "smoke" of any. Truly breathtaking in early summer.

Large, glowing purple-red foliage turns scarlet in autumn. 14" purplish-pink flower panicles in summer. This hybrid seems to be more adaptable than other cotinus. GPP award. 15-20' x 15-20', but plants can easily be kept much smaller.
