Shrubby vine, to 4-8 ft tall, with arching branches that can trail along the ground, rooting as they go, especially in rich soil. Can be trained as an upright growing vine, to 10-15 ft tall or cut back to 18" or so to refresh after flowering. Either way the naked stems remain green through the winter and produce barely fragrant, bright yellow flowers in late winter to early spring. Full to part sun with normal summer water for best flowering. Frost hardy to -20F, USDA zone 6. Great for winter cheer and hummingbird food.

A true gem for those who get the itch for flowers before spring comes. Jasminum nudiflorum blooms in late winter on otherwise bare branches with a cascade of bright yellow flowers. Fully hardy to zone 6, Winter Jasmine has a mounding or arching habit but can be trained on a trellis where it can get much taller than 10 feet. Prune as desired. China ca1850.
Guaranteed to add cheer to your garden in the dead of winter when most plants are resting. A spreading shrub that's vigorous in good spots and determined is terrible spots! This can be a useful groundcover on banks or areas that little else will grow. Will also trail over a wall and one inventive gardener trained hers to grow on an obelisk. A good grower, but can be kept in bounds.

Harder to find these days, but not sure why. Easy to grow, easy habit, good winter flowers. Fits in just about anywhere, and certainly could be a container addition, too!

Yellow is the word! The brightest yellow flowers unfold during the dull days of winter on this the hardiest of jasmines. In some locations it continues to produce a few flowers for many months after the initial flush of blooms. Lustrous green leaves and stems does well planted against a wall or cascading down a bank. Will respond to any degree of warming, so protect from extremes once the buds start opening.
