This tulip of political importance hails from Iran & Afghanistan – 10" tall, carmine red petals edged with glowing white resemble finely painted china! Another 'wild one' that is easy to grow in a sunny, dryish spot and will multiply!
Tulipa clusiana 'Lady Jane' is a lovely botanical tulip with long stems and pointed petals in light pink and white. The flowers open wide on warm sunny days. Botanical tulips are miniature to small species tulips, cultivars of species, or dwarf named cultivars not far removed from their wild ancestors. They are strongly perennial and will naturalize when happy unlike the large Dutch hybrids which are often treated as annuals or which fail after a couple years.
Most tulips aren't naturals for Southern gardens but the clusiana botanical types need less winter chilling; they're happy in regions serious cold doesn't occur. If you live in Atlanta or Dallas (or points north) these little darlings will grow beautifully for you. Tulip Lady Jane has been awarded the Royal Botanical Society's Award of Garden Merit, a prestigious honor bestowed on plants deemed to be great choices for home gardens because of their beauty, durability and reliability.

Perhaps the largest and most striking of all species tulips. The flowers open wide during the sunny hours and stay closed on cloudy days. The picture is from my bulb field. Unlike wimpy modern tulips, these tulips like to multiply and come back every year! And these are great news for those in warm climates: You can grow these! They grow well in the desert here in Arizona even where other tulips don't. The only place I don't think they would grow is tropical climates with no winter chill. Good drainage would be required in the Southeastern US for them to survive their summer dormancy. Some sources say plant them 6-8 inches deep, but I've had success planting them 2-3 inches deep. I think the main thing is to make sure they are below the freeze/thaw zone for your area. ZONES:4-9 Flowering Period: Mid Spring Plant Height:12-18 inches Circumfrence of Bulb:5-6 cm
