A beautiful, large Yucca to 25' tall in gardens, often less in the wild. Its narrow leaves are lined with hairy white filaments, an attractive feature. This is perhaps the hardiest trunking Yucca (to at least -20 °F,) as demonstrated by a fine specimen in Oroville, WA that has weathered 44 frigid eastern Washington (right next to the Canada border, in fact) winters without harm. It also thrives in Seattle with no protection from the rain, given adequate drainage. This collection is from near Silver City, New Mexico, at an altitude of 6,300', one of the cooler and moister areas that it is found in the wild. When I visited in September, the landscape was very green, and the Yuccas looked more lush and healthy than any other Y. elata I saw in the wild, even forming “forests” in some places. DS.
