Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the hardiest Yuccas to cold, this species is native to much of the Southwest, all the way from Colorado to the hot deserts of California. With such a wide geographical range, it is not surprising that this species exhibits a great deal of variation in the wild. In general, however, the plants are trunkless, with thick and rather broad blue or green leaves with a few filaments. This collection from Peach Springs, Arizona represents a rather large and very blue form of this species. All forms produce grotesquely large, fleshy fruits on a prominent stalk (in the wild at least), which follow the showy, fragrant flowers. I quickly learned that cleaning the seeds from fleshy fruited Yuccas is not at all a fun task, and it is even worse if the fruits start rotting before I have a chance to get to them. Thanks to Steve Smullen for handling the job when I simply ran out of time and didn't feel like dealing with them. Hardy to at least -15 °F. Very limited supply. DS. (packet of 10 seeds)
