This collection from near Mayer, Arizona is from smaller plants with greyer leaves with beautiful horizontal banding. The plants looked very much like A. deserti subsp. simplex. Tony Avent reports that some of these plants were growing in muddy soils by a creek bed, though I forgot to take note of this when I was there. 5°F.
