Thalictrum rochebrunianum plant details

Consider this delightful, delicate-looking meadow rue a must-have. Plants are airy and open with dark wiry stems holding clouds of flowers rising up to 6 feet(!!!) tall, mixing nicely in the border without obscuring the view of other plants. The matte bluish glaucous foliage is pretty in its own right, while airy clusters of dainty lavender flowers with prominent yellow stamens get most of the attention. When happy, they may naturalize and form a drift, which is a most welcome sight. Easy to grow in sun or part shade so long as they are provided summer water, plants thrive rich soil.

Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This wonderful perennial if often called 'lavender-mist' meadow rue because of the huge masses of airy lavender-violet flowers with their pretty yellow stamens. Vigorous clumps of ferny 4-6' foliage produce their blooms from July all the way until September; a spectacular sight when planted in masses! S-PSh/M/GDr
(LAVENDER MIST MEADOW RUE) We call this the ‘Purple Haze’ plant…5-6’ stems rise up over clumps of blue green ferny foliage and explode into clouds of lavender July August. Showy and easy to grow! Sun to part shade, average to rich, well drained soil. Belongs in every garden.
Clouds of small four-petalled amethyst flowers with lemon yellow central stamens float above the dark stems and airy foliage in summer. In rich soils plants may need some light support from nearby shrubs, small trees or other tall perennials.
A marvelous perennial that fashions an ethereal, lavender-hued mist, this elegant Japanese native boasts attractive foliage and a bounteous display of dainty flowers. Tall stems hold glabrous, blue-green, oval-shaped leaves, and each produces wiry branched blooming panicles. Prominent pale yellow stamens and persistent sepals accentuate the display. Most effective in a drift, place wherever a glow of purple would be welcome.
Japanese, it's one of the showiest species, with large single pink flowers in an open panicle. Plants take a while to establish and are not as vigorous as some of the other species, but they more than make up for it in the grace department. ZONE 4
Sprays of lavender flowers mid to late summer rise above foliage. May naturalize. Butterflies love it! Zones 3-8.
'Lavender Mist' as this variety is popularly known, is a tall back of the border plant with airy spays of lavender flowers in July-Aug. We use it as a backdrop for Oriental Lilies. Hardier than T. delavayi.
A light and airy, 6 ft perennial, good for the back of the border in the shady garden. The foliage is dainty and Columbine-like on this tough Japanese native, the stalks are dark purple, and the early summer flowers form clouds of deep pink flowers accented with yellow stamens. Sun to part shade in rich soil that never dries out -- yes, summer water. Dies back in winter and returns in spring. Said to be deer resistant. Frost hardy to -30F, USDA zone 4.
Do not fail to take this home. A killer plant in our border we got from UBC wrongly ID'd as T. uchiyamae. My usual fount of purple prose has withered to a trickle at the daunting prospect of describing such magnificence. To 8' with great foliage and clouds of flowers.
Other than never giving it any water, I don’t think one could kill this beautiful and dependable Japanese native. From a spritely base of pretty Columbine-like foliage in Spring, it shoots up thick sturdy upright purplish stalks to 6-7’ tall. Come June these burst into a huge cloud – 3’ across – of lavender-pink flowers set off by a boss of prominent fluffy soft-yellow anthers. Charm incarnate! Ideal for rising above Roses and shorter subjects. Some say it’s best massed but my single plantings never fail to impress. Deciduous but returns for an even better show each season. Rich, loamy soil. Deer resistant! Best of the genus!
