Katsura, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, is a medium to large tree native to China and Japan with a beautiful shape and lovely, small, heart-shaped leaves that emerge flushed with burgundy, age to blue-green, and then turn shades of pink, red, orange and yellow in autumn when the leaves can give off a lovely burnt caramel aroma. It has inconspicuous flowers. Trees will typically reach 40-50 feet over time. 'Morioka Weeping' is a graceful, pendulous form that will become a year-round sculptural centrepiece in any garden. For the 2025 Rare Flowering Tree Pre-Order plants will be in 1g pots and about 1-2 feet tall. Photo: Wikipedia.

(Marioka Weeping) Our original tree is 40'x15'. There are several vertical leaders with all the rest of the growth cascading. Looks like a large fountain. One of the glories of our garden.

A truly magnificent small tree to 25' x 20' at maturity; this beautifully graceful specimen is a vertical grower that produces a series of arching and cascading branches with lovely heart-shaped leaves which are copper in spring, bluish-green in summer and soft golden-apricot in fall, autumn also brings the intense burnt-sugar scent which Cercidipyllum are known for. This weeping Katsura Tree develops a central leader and grows upright with cascading branches. It grows quickly into a tall narrow tree. Fall colors are pink to red or sometimes yellow. When leaves change color in fall they emit a sweet smell like cotton candy.

When young the growth rate is strongly vertical with just some weeping, but as it matures its weeping characteristic is much more pronounced. The leaves in spring are red-purple turning to their summer green and in fall they put on a show of bright, sunny yellow with orange and apricot tones. Growth and color are best when grown in full sun. It will grow from 15 to 25' tall.

This Weeping Katsura will get perhaps 20' slowly since there is no leader simply a series of layering branches cascading down. The tree has no pests, but hates drought and wind and so takes some planting thought. The new leaves are pinkish and fall color is yellow with a pink tinge. zone 6
