Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Showy sunflower, a naturally occurring cross between H. rigidus and H. tuberosus, open clusters of 12cm flowers atop 2m stems, nice for late season color. Z 4
Aptly named, this is one of the largest and showiest of all the native sunflowers. The high contrast between the bright yellow petals and dark black centers give this sunflower a distinctive appearance. Blooming late in the summer, the seeds ripen just in time for migrating birds to gorge on them as they make their long journey south. Growing three to six feet tall, it spreads rapidly by rhizomes, so give this plant some room. Plant in patches for best effect. Grows in dry sand, loam and clay. Hardy to Zones 3 - 8.
Native to the Midwest, this is a BIG honking perennial Sunflower, growing 4’ to 8’ tall & bearing lots of yellow blooms on long stems very late in the year - August thru Fall. Since it spreads by rhizomes (like H. maximillianii) it may not be suitable for small gardens, but it is useful for big, open areas you don’t want to water or take care of. Heat, drought & clay tolerant!
