Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Dianthus carthusianorum, also known as clusterhead pink, is an unusual pink species with linear basal leaves and tall, airy stems up to two feet or more with tight clusters of dark purple buds revealing crimson red, serrated petals that quickly turn to bright pink as they fully open. It's a lovely addition to the front or mid border where it can act as a "see-through" plant similar to Verbena bonariensis.

Hailing from the alpine meadows of central and southeast Europe, this tall growing Dianthus begets small, deep magenta blooms. Narrow, grassy green foliage comprise the long lasting rosettes, which send up wiry, and nearly leafless, bluish stems. Crowning the lengthy stalks, little tufts of reddish brown calyxes cradle six or more vividly tinted flowers enhanced by fringed petals. Happiest in dry sunny sites and alkaline soils, this sprightly perennial brings cheery color to a naturalized planting of grasses.

Tall & elegant, this long blooming, super-tough Dianthus species has been cultivated since the Middle Ages! Foliage is grassy-green & low – 6” high & about 1’ wide, but blooming stems grow from 2-2.5’! Just so we’re clear, this is NOT the boinkier form more commonly found on the market. That plant is not allowed on the premises. Blooms are small & bright magenta, borne in 2-3” clusters at the top of the tall, straight stems & keep coming from June ‘til frost (with dead-heading). Makes a marvelous cut flower! Long-lived & very tough, this species does great in coastal conditions & loves alkaline soil. Evergreen in milder zones.
