'Solar Flare'.
Color all year!: bold leaves that emerge totally creamy-yellow ; keep that sheen over green, stalks of dark pink hummingbird flowers in spring and burgundy-red foliage in fall-winter. Sun-PSh/Med PPAF
We're always intrigued by the idea of evergreen perennials (i.e. Hellebores, Rhodea) and Bergenia is one that should get more attention. Commonly called Pig Squeak, Bergenia offers oval glossy foliage usually with pink flowers in spring. This recent selection sends forth new soft yellow foliage in the spring which take on chartreuse tones in summer and deeper green in winter. The best situation for growing Bergenia is in a sheltered, well drained spot, perhaps on a slope where it is not punished by cold winter winds and sun. Grows 15" tall by 2' wide.
New leaves unfurl a creamy yellow in the spring and hold the light yellow through most of the summer in Oregon. A cool mutation out of B. 'Solar Flare'. 'Lunar Glow' has the traditional bold, evergreen leaves of the Bergenia in addition to lovely dark pink flowers in the spring and burgundy red leaves in winter. Easy to grow.
