Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Changing leaves aren?t the only thing colorful for fall...these bright 1-2' spikes of scarlet red flowers will brighten up any autumn (and on into winter) garden or any autumn table...an excellent cut flower. S/M/GDr
Ignored all spring and summer at the nursery, this hardy South African native comes into its own in the fall and blooms continuously well into winter (and sometimes into the new year!). Fine-textured iris-like leaves and deep peach gladiolus-like flowers on 1-2' tall spikes. Really a must-have for the fall garden.
We picked this one up at our regular gentian source in Switzerland where it's sold without a variety name, just as the species. We determined it ought to be hardier than others but still have to do more testing to be sure. Either way, it has proven to be a plant with sturdy stems and large, bright salmon-pink flowers. Likes well drained soil, but prefers some summer moisture. Excellent cut flowers. May bloom all winter in zones 8 and higher.
One of the last plants to initiate flowering in the fall and hopefully some make it to the vase before heavy frost. 18" tall and colonizing. Likes moist soils.
