Nursery contributed plant descriptions

?Very decorative and extremely beautiful? (G.S. Thomas), this amazing perennial was named for ?enormous, metallic? (to 2' across), 7-parted, horse-chestnut- ike leaves but admired also for its lovely, foamy 3' pyramidal flowers. PSh/M-W
Bold and strong in the woodland, I find it is always useful to have some large leaved plants. By way of contrast, use light fluffy foliage well above the leaves. Choice.
Rodgersias are fine architectural specimens characterized by brownish black, fleshy rhizomes and large textured leaves spreading to a foot across, so be sure to provide these plants with plenty of space. Similar to the palmate leaves of Horse Chestnut, the crinkled foliage of this species is tinted bronze and heavily veined. The 7 leaflets radiate from the center and shaggy brown hair covers the loosely branched stalks, which hold pyramidal flowers, ranging in color from porcelain white to muted pink.
After growing Rodgersias for a number of years, I've come to the conclusion that none of the pure species exist in cultivation. Even if the plants look right like these, with Horse Chestnut foliage and so forth they are probably hybrids, which is actually good from a garden standpoint, being more amenable to cultivation with a bit of hybrid vigor and all. Blooms: spring, pink-white. Huge foliage. These will form large patches making a bold statement. Combine well with Primula, Iris, Hedychium Zone 5-9, 48", China, part shade, moist, humus rich
Large palmate leaves like the chestnut tree its named after are the perfect complement to hosta and ferns. An astilbe-like white flower plume in summer. 3 x 3 feet.
