Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Huangwenzhu' is one of the several very colorful cultivars of the giant timber bamboo Phyllostachys vivax. On this variety, the green canes emerge with thin random stripes of yellow above each branch bud on alternating sides of the cane. It achieves the same potential size as the species of up to 75 feet high with six inch diameter canes, even in limited growing space. Like the species, plants size up very quickly and can gain more than fifteen feet in height per year until reaching their mature size.
'Huangwenzhu' was originally a mutation from a P. vivax 'Aureocaulis' (mostly yellow canes with random green stripes around the cane) plant, and also has an inverse variety called 'Huangwenzhu Inversa' which has yellow canes with regular green striping above each branch node.

Even though all of the Phyllostachys vivax varieties will achieve a large size in the ground, they can be kept to a smaller size in a container and grow well in a large pot. A 25 gallon pot or a half wine barrel will usually be large enough to accommodate this colorful plant and keep it to around ten or fifteen feet in height, a viable option for those with limited space.

The nomenclature for bamboo is all messed up. This is a big 8 meters, winter hardy species surviving -35c that will invade your entire garden and crack its way through solid concrete to enter your basement; stunning plant but very aggressive and difficult to eradicate, confine the roots in a strong container, plastic garbage cans don't work.
A cold hardy bamboo good to -5 F. Commonly referred to as "Yellow Groove Vivax." It is essentially a "yellow groove" form of vivax. A green culm with a yellow stripe occurring on the sulcus of the culm.

Bold yellow sulcus stripes on pea green culms create a splendid combination. Can achieve heights of 40 feet.
