Hydrangea seemannii

A native from Mexico introduced into America in 1985 by Neil Treseder. Dark green, glossy leaves shine year-round. In summer white flowers appear similar to the flowers of lace cap hydrangeas. Needs to be staked when young before it attaches to an arbor or other climbing surface. Filtered light, evenly moist, well drained acidic soils.

This rare species of climbing hydrangea is from Mexico, Central and South America. It has mid green, rounded, thick, glossy foliage that often has burgundy tones when young. In summer it offers copious amounts of ivory white flowers that first emerge as tight ivory clusters resembling duck eggs. Water well until established, especially if planted at the base of a tree. Smaller growing than H. integrifolia and thus better for use on smaller trees or walls. Increased light results in more flowers.

A great stump the botanist plant, almost no one will guess hydrangea (actually it is in section Cornidia). The glossy thick textured leaves look more like an evergreen magnolia than a hydrangea; this is supposed to climb by self-clinging stems but to date ours have remained upright and shrub like with no hint of adventitious rootlets. Flowers are white in flat clusters, and only produced on older plants; it can also be used as an evergreen ground cover in warmer areas. Dan optimistically calls it zone 7, In colder areas grow it in a tub and winter it frost free, I can believe it would do well as a house plant, its weird enough to make it worth the hassle of hauling around.

Vigorous evergreen climber. Produces long lasting, domed white blooms with a few sterile flowers surrounding the smaller white flowers in the center. Dark green leaves, 2-8" long and ½ -2½" wide. A wonderful choice for an evergreen climber where the winters remain mild.

This rare evergreen climber from Mexico with great glossy leaves is the most amazing hydrangea we've seen. The leaves are thick and slightly ovate and a great contrast to white pods that open to a delicate white lacecap. White sterile flowers surround white fertile florets that open with white corymbs. This beautiful plant will grow upright with little assistance or climb with trailing tendrals. I have seen this spelled many different ways - Seemanni, Seemanii.
