Delightful wine-red flowers, though not as fragrant, are larger and showy on this special 6-8' J. C. Raulston hybrid between the Asian C. sinensis and our C. floridus: the best of both worlds in a vigorous, floriferous shrub. S-PSh/M
(SINOCALYCANTHUSX CALYCANTHUS) Deciduous shrub, 8-10’ high and wide; stunning, large, fragrant maroon red wine blooms April to May stop visitors in their tracks! Prefers sun to light shade, well-drained soil (but tolerates clay) and regular water. Prune immediately after bloom as this flowers on previous year’s growth. USDA Z5-9
Attractive and elegant with glossy, dark green foliage on a dense patch of arching stems. Small, white, bell-like flowers hang from the leaf axils in spring. A wonderful container specimen, with texture that resembles a short bamboo. Makes an excellent small-scale groundcover or filler for a shady woodland border. Evergreen.
This hybrid of C. chinensis and C. floridus made by Richard Hartlage when he was a student at North Carolina State. This plant gets the best from both parents. The flower is 2" across and rich burgundy. Our plants bloom from April to August. Great yellow fall color. Thanks Richard for creating such a great plant. Also, the Great Plant Picks (check it out on-line).
Lovely, large, deep wine-red blooms with white highlights flower in late spring and early summer. The flower remains good-looking for a very long time, despite going past its prime. Still one of our favorites as the years go by. Deciduous shrub 8' x 8'; yellow fall color. Minimum temperature: -20°F
The Hartlage Wine allspice is a dense, rounded deciduous small shrub with intriguing camellia-like flowers four inches across. The flowers look like two flowers in one with a cup of red-pink outer tepals holding a smaller cup of pink-white inner tepals. This inner cup contains a mounded ring of yellow stamens. The large oval, light-green leaves make this an interesting foliage shrub when not in bloom.
'Hartlage Wine' sweetshrub is a wonderful hybrid between Calycanthus floridus and Calycanthus chinensis introduced by the JC Raulston Arboretum.? This hybrid combines the best of both parents and as a landscape plant is superior to either parent.? slightly fragrant, very dark pink to wine-colored, 2.5-3" wide?flowers are produced through much of the summer.? This fast growing large shrub has bright green foliage and does well in partial shade.? I also saw it at performing beautifully in almost a full day of sun at the Green Bay Botanic Garden.? It's not to picky about soil, but moist, well-drained soils would probably be best for fast growth and winter survival.
This seems to be the first of many hybrid Calycanthus to come and so far it is our favorite, with large maroon red flowers over a long time in spring and early summer. It isn't a small shrub, and could perhaps be trained into a small tree by those inclined. In areas prune to late frost it is best to give it overhead protection.
A beautiful hybrid of Calycanthus and Sinocalycanthus from the US National Arboretum. This sweetshrub has large maroon, magnolia-like flowers with little fragrance. It is a strong grower with green glossy foliage.
Recently introduced by the JC Raulston Arboretum, this hybrid of the above C. sinensis and our native C. florida, boasts 2-3" deep wine red magnolia like flowers in May. It lacks fragrance but is a handsome shrub with lustrous dark green disease resistant foliage; flowering stems are outstanding in vases.
This deciduous plant grows rapidly to an open 9' x 6' shrub. Likes sun and is shade tolerant, great for garden borders or group planting. Flowers are 3-4" and burgundy colored with a spicy fragrance. Blooms in April-May heavily on current and previous years growth. Leaves are glossy green in summer and yellow in fall. A remarkable new hybrid, get one before your neighbor does.
