Very fragrant (melon-scented), unique lime-yellow flowers make this vigorous (to 8-10') E. US native selection a great companion for its reddish-brown sisters. S-PSh/M
Calycanthus 'Athens' is a light yellow flowering sweet shrub. C. 'Athens' was found and named by Michael Dirr. This is an easy grower with lots of flowers that have the scent of cantaloupe.
An unusual light yellow-green flowered form (like an unfolding lotus) of the deciduous native sweetshrubs, introduced by Mike Dirr. Also known as Carolina Allspice, it blooms in May and intermittently thereafter pervading the atmosphere with a pleasant, subtle fruity fragrance - probably the strongest fragrance of the Calycanthes. The leaf in fall is a beautiful clear yellow. 1.5" flower, 5'x5' dense, rounded shrub. Minimum temperature: -20°F
A Sweetshrub (also called Carolina Allspice) with the most wonderful creamy yellow flowers. I've heard the scent described as 'melon', but I think it's more like Juicy Fruit gum. Light shade is best. Said to get 8-10 feet tall, but seem a bit smaller here.
