Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Our plant of C. obtusa 'Nana' is 50 years old and is a pyramidal form 18”x 18”. The lovely twisted fans of foliage are deep green year round.
Dark-green foliage is arranged in a beautiful, swirling pattern. This compact, dwarf conifer makes an excellent rock garden plant and is great for bonsai.
Though found over 140 years ago it still remains one of the best miniature conifers. With its slow growth and dense form makes a good choice for the rock garden or containers. The large specimens are magnificent. Filtered to full sun in moist, well-drained soil.
A popular choice for the miniature gardener. This reliable, slow-growing dwarf hinoki wears wonderfully rich, green and yellow foliage, turning into a darker emerald green as the branch goes toward the trunk - just lovely! Trim away the bottom branches to expose some of the trunk to turn it into a tree shape. Deep, rich, green and yellow foliage. Upright broad in shape. Growth rate is 3 to 6"/yr - less than 2" here in the Seattle area. Hardy to -20 °F or zone 5. Heat zones 8-1. Full sun or cool sun. Regular water with well drained soil. If in a pot, let dry out to barely damp in between to avoid over watering. Shelter the pot from the extreme hot sun in late afternoon in the summer
Dwarf tight dark green slow growing conifer
Wonderful dark green foliage forms tiny mounds of year-round color. Great for troughs or container gardening. Will grow 1-2" per year with an overall height of 1-2' in ten years. One of the smallest forms of Hinoki Cypress. Great for rock and container gardening. Wonderful year-round interest.
Dark green leaves rounded at tips, irregular shape. Good in Rock gardens or containers. Hardy to zone 5.
Very slow growing type. A 90 year-old specimen was 20" by 24". Obviously, easily kept small. Very dwarf, very compact and right, globose, green foliage. Small cones follow small, insignificant blooms. This is a true miniature and is often confused in the trade (most often the plants sold under this name are C. obtusa 'Nana Compacta'.). The true plant was introduced by Dr. von Siebold around 1860. After 10 years, the height and width will be about 8" by 7-9". Great Plant Picks - Miller Botanical Garden.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana' is believed by many conifer growers to be the one of tiniest of all the dwarf Hinoki Cypress. Its slow growth rate of approx. 1/2" inch a year means this baby is going to take awhile to outgrow a trough or container. The sculptural habit of its tight but irregular form makes 'Nana' a focal point in miniature gardens.
The sculptural deep green foliage for which the species is highly prized on a very slow-growing dwarf form. Outstanding in the rock garden or dwarf conifer border. AGM winner.
