(MERRY BELLS) Clump forming woodland perennial native to Missouri; erect stems with pleated leaves emerge in spring and grow to 2’ dripping with 1.5” yellow flowers with attractive twisty petals in April and May, followed by interesting triangular fruits. Easy to grow in moist, decently drained soil in part to full shade. Rhizomes are slow expanding. USDA Z4-9      3x5” tall pot
Uvularia grandiflora is a bellwort from central and eastern North America that forms clumps of erect two foot tall stems with twisted, bright green, lance-shaped leaves and pendulous, bell-shaped, yellow flowers with twisted petals.
Other than the flowers are larger than on U. sessilifolia, they are deeply colored and very showy. Easy to grow in a woodland setting. Clumping. Shipped as bare root into April, potted later in the year but they won't be rooted in until summer.
With subtle grace, this moisture-loving woodland dweller unveils exquisitely dainty, moonlit yellow blooms. Its slender rhizomes send up a colony of wiry, erect branching stalks alternately wrapped in smooth, fresh green oblong foliage without petioles. From the upper leaf nodes on arched stem tips, 6 twisted lanceolate petals define narrowly bell-shaped blooms that enact a merry, dangling dance. A Solomon's Seal relation native to central and eastern America, Merrybells easily enchants any open, shady haunt given humus-rich soil, mulch and companions like Disporum 'Heronswood Night' and Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip'.
This classic spring wildflower makes a great focal center in the woodland garden. Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) has distinctive, deep yellow flowers that really stand out when planted with lower growing spring wildflowers and woodland sedges. Spreads slowly by rhizomes to form attractive clumps. Does well in any well-drained soil in medium to full shade. Hardy to Zones 3 - 7.
The perfoliate leaves glabrous above pubescent beneath, the dangling 5 cm bright yellow flowers are very showy and the plants naturalize well, Bellwort is perfect mixed with Polygonatums and Disporums in a woodland setting.
Large yellow flowers are borne in spring at the tips of arching stalks as the leaves unfurl. Similar arching habit to Soloman's seal provides the shade garden with great texture. A great native that is much overlooked as a garden plant.
Blooms: pendent, yellow/ deciduous, blue-green leaves Zone 7-9. 12"-16", Eastern US, shade-sun, moist, well drained

Merry Bells. One of our favorite of the eastern woodland wildflowers. Rich gold pendant flowers dangling like earrings on a woman of some serious substance. Combines beautifully with upper crust plants such as Cardiocrinums and Arisaemas yet hangs comfortably with Hostas.
