Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The dramatic Trillium sulcatum hails from the southern Appalachian Mountains and nearby areas. It has dark maroon to velvety red flowers with recurved petals atop large, somewhat shiny leaves. The green to brownish sepals have rolled edges like the prow of a kayak. Trillium are exquisite plants for the shade garden blooming in early to mid spring with their elegant flowers. They are spring ephemerals that may go dormant by summer. Keep in mind that they may go dormant early in the year they are first planted and could sulk a bit in their second year before settling in for beautiful displays for years to come.
We are delighted to be able to offer some spectacular dark maroon purple forms of sulcatum. These are the real deal and some of the showiest trilliums we have ever grown (sulcatum from the type locality is a rather small flowered thing hardly worth growing) Note that the woodlanders marked with an * ship either early to mid march or summer dormant.
Blooms: spring, dark red flowers are held high above trifoliate foliage. A great clumper, combines well with Erythronium, Epimedium, and Beesia
