Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The nodding wakerobin (Trillium flexipes) is a graceful species with pure white flowers that can be upright or hang down below the three leaves which are large and heart shaped. It is native to southern Ontario and the US midwest. Trillium are exquisite plants for the shade garden blooming in early to mid spring with their elegant flowers. They are spring ephemerals that may go dormant by summer. Keep in mind that they may go dormant early in the year they are first planted and could sulk a bit in their second year before settling in for beautiful displays for years to come.
Nodding, white, sweet scented flowers are the attraction here. They prefer a somewhat neutral to alkaline soil and nod to varying degrees with northern forms often carrying their flowers below the leaves. The name apparently refers to the knee like bend at the top of the pedicel. Ovaries are typically white with pink streaks.
