Clusters of sweet smelling, white stars above the foliage April > May on a good looking evergreen woodland ground cover. 8-10" tall stems on slowly expanding, dense rhizomes; leaves resemble Lily-of-the-Valley. Light to full shade, average moisture in well-drained soil. Nice for the woodland.
Charming liliaceous evergreen ground cover, one of the myriad from south and east Asia. With bold leaves, this one forms 12" leafy rosettes of deep green slowly spreading to form small colonies to 3 ft or so at home in the deepest, darkest shade. The flowers are tiny trumpets, white and fragrant, appearing in spring and again in fall. Very good for a tropical effect. Needs summer moisture. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
Speirantha convallarioides resembles lily-of-the-valley in foliage but is evergreen forming dense, somewhat tropical-looking mats over time from slowly spreading rhizomes. In mid spring the clumps are adorned with short spikes of sweetly fragrant, starry, pure white flowers. Plants may rebloom in fall. This rare shade plant is a must have and we are very pleased to finally be able to offer it.
This little known shade loving perennial, native to China, is one of a few reliably evergreen perennials for zone 6 climates. Dark green strap like leaves (much like that of Lily of the Valley) form ever spreading clumps from stoloniferous roots. Stubby spires of fragrant white starry flowers appear in mid-late spring. Grows 10" tall.
Chinese Lily of the Valley is so much easier to say isn't it? But the satisfaction gained of articulation is worth every effort especially when you roll it out in an fluid yet casual offhand manner. Make no mistake that underneath that thin green veneer of gentility, gardening is a blood sport and one or two well-practiced pronunciations can often render your position unassailable. Just sayin'. This is an uncommon shade-loving evergreen relative to the familiar Lily of the Valley from China and doing very well here spreading more slowly than its cousin to create a mat of evergreen foliage. Instead of the familiar white bells, this has stems of small white starburst flowers backed to good effect by the broad green leaves. We had hoped to see this during our 2015 plant hunting trip to Anhui and Zhejiang but it eluded us. Hardy to zone 5b.
A monotypic Lily of the Valley relative form the Jiangxi region of China, this slowly creeping evergreen woodlander is rarely encountered in gardens and prefers a lime free soil, the starry white flowers are in 6? racemes and are produced in late spring
Blooms: spring, white, evergreen leaves to 10" long, slowly spreading rhizome resembling lily of the valley. About 3' in 10 years. Zone 5-9. 12", China, part shade, moist, humus rich.
Shade loving perennial, about 6 inches tall. Shiny dark green leaves and spidery white flowers in spring.
