Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Though not as well known as its cousin Solomon?s-Seal, it is ?even better garden decoration? (B. Miles) with starry white flowers in a large terminal cluster 2-3' high in spring followed by showy berries. PSh/M-D
Maianthemum racemosum subsp. racemosum is the eastern North American counterpart to BC's native subspecies amplexicaule. It has more arching stems with leaves not clasping but on short, tapering petioles. The leaves are alternate and elliptic to ovate with a terminal inflorescence of foamy, pure white flowers followed by greenish yellow berries with reddish spots slowly filling in until the berries are all bright red. Resembles a Solomon's seal in habit with the difference being in the flowers.
Plumes of white flowers grace the arching stems in spring, and the bright red berries provide interest in the fall. The seeds are a favorite of Ruffed Grouse. Solomon's Plume (Smilacina racemosa) spreads slowly by underground rhizomes to form attractive clumps. Typically found in partial shade and deep, moist, soft soils it also grows in acid soils under oaks and pines. Hardy to Zones 3 - 8.
Husky woodland plants of considerable beauty, the arching stems of False Solomon's Seal carry fluffy white flowers in plume like terminal racemes followed by berries like vitrified drops of bright blood in autumn. Smilacina too has some Asian counterparts, which are great garden plants. ZONE 4
Blooms: spring, white plumes, fragrant, red fruit/ oval, pleated foliage Zone 3-9. 2', PNW, shade-sun, moist, well drained
Clump forming with unbranched, arching stems to 36” with alternate ovate-lance shaped leaves. Terminal racemes of many creamy-white 1” flowers in mid and late spring, followed by red berries. Excellent for an open woodland accent plant or a shaded border.
