Perhaps more than any other perennial, this rare woodland treasure earns the right to be called "exquisite". Paris polyphylla is a Trillium relative from the Himalayas, Western China, and southeast Asia. The stem is circled by a single whorl of glossy, green leaves which is echoed by the flower with its own whorl of green bracts subtending threadlike yellow-green petals, golden stamens and purple ovary. Part shade in rich soil. Can take a "year off" after planting and not emerge till the next year.
A fabulous plant for the shady garden, a Nepalese trillium relation collected by intrepid plantsman, Dan Hinkley. These have surprising flowers, green sepals in a star shape and thready golden petals, followed by late summer fruit in shades of red-orange. The whorled leaves are handsome and provide an nice statement. To see it is to covet it. For shade and rich soil with summer moisture. Frost hardy in USDA zone 5. [Heronswood form]
Blooms: spring, unusual, purple ovary, golden stamen/ whorled foliage Zone 5-9. 8"-12", China, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
A true collector's gem from the Himalayan foothills is this Trillium relative. Winner of the Most Complex Green Flower Award, this has interesting and quietly lovely flowers followed in summer by riotous orange-red fruit. Very cool. These are nice big bulbs. Basic Trillium culture.
