Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii 'Big Momma' is a fast-growing broadleaf deciduous or semi-evergreen perennial shrub with green foliage. In fall and summer orange and red flowers emerge. Attracts hummingbirds. Grows well with sun - shade and regular water. Does well in average and well-drained soil.
CHARACTERISTICS OF Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii 'Big Momma'
Largest blooms of all turk's caps, a perennial in zones 7B-11. Likes full sun to part shade, growing 5'x3' at maturity. Hummingbirds love the nectar. All summer the tips of the woody stems send up 2-3" scarlet blooms that are swirled like a turk's cap. A herbaceous perennial growing quickly in spring. Lovely velvety green foliage.
2-3" sleepy scarlet blooms are held upright along and at the ends of the woody stems from late spring to fall or year round in mild climates. Considered the largest blooming of the turk's caps. An excellent perennial for Hummingbirds. Introduced by Gregg Grant of Stephen F. Austin University.
