These true blue beauties have enchanted gardeners since 1836! A bulbous perennial, this cultivar is bigger and deeper blue than other starflowers – So easy to grow in sun to light shade, poor soils, competes with roots; will even naturalize in a meadow/lawn! Blooms mid spring, sweetly fragrant, 4-8" tall.
One of the first Spring bulbs to bloom in mild Winter gardens, ‘Rolf Fiedler’ is an uplifting sight in February, with lots ofdeliciously honey-scented,long-lasting 1” flowers, delicate purple with a darker stripe. They makelong-lasting cut flowersin a small vase, possibly the best way to enjoy the scent, since the plant otherwise hugs the ground 4-6” high, with short 6-10” flower stems. Very easy to grow in a sunny or lightly shaded area (morning shade or filtered shade is OK) and tolerant of many soil conditions. It’ll be Summer dormant, but the leaves return in the cooler temperatures of Fall. Recommended for edging, pots and as an underplanting with trees and roses. Known to naturalize, but deadheading the flowers will keep it contained. In my personal garden, ‘Rolf Fiedler’ has been more restrained that the better known variety ‘Wisley Blue’. Plant bulbs 4” deep and 2 – 3” apart. 10 Bulbs per Bag
A diminutive member of the lily family, star flowers are sweet and unusual additions to the spring garden. Great for layering with late crocuses and other early flowering bulbs, these add a sprinkling of plump light blue stars to edges, in rock gardens and along walkways and paths.

A gift several years ago from Marion Jarvie, we grow this in a cold greenhouse and it puts on quite a display with big clear blue flowers. There are about ten species of Ipheion, although uniflora seems to be the only one in general cultivation, and Rolf Fielder is either a selection or hybrid of it.
One of the prettiest of the numerous cultivars now available, ‘Rolf’ forms a moderately expanding clump of blue-green leaves rising to only 4-5“ with fragrant, deep purple-blue streaked flowers fading to violet from fall here to early spring. Likes sun to part shade and appreciates summer water though doesn't depend on it. Particularly useful under the bright edges of shrubs where there is much root competition. Frost hardy in USDA zone 5.
