This variety of the Mediterranean fan palm hails from northwest Africa in the Atlas Mountains and adjacent areas. It is considered by some to be hardier than the species. The Atlas Mountain palm has glaucous blue foliage top and bottom, a shade that deepens with age and in full sun positions. It forms a short multi-trunked specimen with time. Plant in a warm, protected microclimate in your yard in well-drained soil. Some bubble wrap will help it if the temperatures really drop.
Chamaerops Humilis var. cerifera is an evergreen, low maintenance palm from Southern Europe hardy to about 5 °F or more when mature. It is very similar in appearance to the normal Chamaerops humilis except that the narrow, fan palm leaves are a different color.
