Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Heron's Pirouette Begonia is a hardy perennial species that displays light pink and yellow flowers above dense pea green mounding foliage through the summer. It has a much longer flowering season than almost any other perennial, with the first flowers often appearing at the end of May or beginning of June and lasting until the first frost in the fall. The plants are also more resistant to deer and rabbit browsing than most other plants, however deer will still eat the leaves if there isn't any other food available.
This beautiful hardy begonia has light green, nicely textured foliage with green reverses. In late summer through the fall it is topped with masses of bright candy pink flowers which last almost until frost. 'Heron's Pirouette' is a Dan Hinkley collection from Heronswood with larger flower clusters than the species on tall plants. A great plant in combination with ferns and hostas and for colour in the fall shade garden.
A graceful hardy begonia with cascading tresses of bloom in clear pink, a shade that complements the large, silky, pear-green leaves. An all summer flowering gem for shaded areas of the garden with hostas at its feet, or grown in large containers and overwintered indoors dormant. For moist, organic, well-drained soils.
Brought to our attention by Dan Hinkley, this lovely and hardy Japanese begonia has masses of light pink flowers that charm gardeners from spring to fall. Luminous olive-green fleshy leaves and brilliant magenta stems and petioles set off these sparkling blooms. It all comes alive when the evening sun penetrates, becoming a pink, green, and red Japanese porcelain. Pink seed-heads are a late season encore. Easy to grow but not mundane. Colonizes nicely for mass plantings and a lush look. 2+' x 2' Minimum temperature: -10°F
Though the polished triangular foliage resembles the species, it was the masses of deep pink, nearly 12 in. long flower clusters, pirouetting with a dancer's grace that caught Dan Hinkley's keen eye during a 1997 Japanese expedition. Draped on slender pendulous stems, the richly hued flowers, highlighted by lavender accents, deliver a splendid nonstop performance from June until fall; later warm pink seed heads provide a midautumn encore. Relishing well-drained soil and bright shade, this delicate-looking hardy Begonia is a sterling choice for a container or for massing as a bedding plant.
This summer charmer was selected for its masses of brilliant pink flowers that are presented with great aplomb for many months. Excellent as a bedding plant or great candidate for containers. It is surprisingly hardy and easy to grow. Great summer and autumn appeal.
A true perennial begonia bearing nodding pink blooms from late spring to fall. A tuberous, gently spreading and upright perennial. Prefers a rich, loose, well-drained soil. Shipped in dormancy from October-April.
Blooms: summer-fall, dark-pink/ deciduous, lime green foliage w/ red stems/ Heronswood Introduction Zone 6-9. 8"-24", China, part shade-shade, moist, well drained.
A Hardy, (yes, really, in zone 6!) Begonia with ruby tinted foliage and pendant pink-white flowers in late summer and early fall. Breaks dormancy in mid-late spring, so make sure you mark where it is planted so you don't disturb when planting anew in the spring. 18-24".
A selection by Dan Hinkley from Japan of this hardy tuberous species. Definitely an improvement over the typical form with much longer clusters of pink flowers which effectively doubles the floral oomph. Easy in the garden - we always forget we have it until it pokes up in late May.
