Like a Barberry ?witch?s broom?, this tiny red-leaved (from bright-red to bronzy-red) European variety should make a very special 1-2' edger or container plant. S/M
Very compact, neat and tidy shrub is all decked out in deep garnet foliage! Rising to only 12" and spreading to 18", this small, deciduous shrub is very versatile, and it requires NO PRUNING. Small bright yellow flowers stand out against the leaves in spring and small, brilliant red berries dangle from the bare branches in the winter like tiny colored droplets. Sun, fertile, well drained soil, deer resistant, drought tolt. and fall color too (brilliant scarlet and orange). PNW Great Plant Pick.
Prolific color on a compact habit! Fresh green foliage backs sprite-like, short, satiny red blooms with frilly, golden-yellow centers. Flower petals are tipped with frosty white in the summer heat. The small mounded form is perfect for smaller gardens and containers, edging walkways, or accenting cottage garden borders.
Berberis thunbergii 'Bagatelle' is a very small (18"x18") shrub with vibrant red purple foliage. Please use this plant so it doesn't have to be sheared as people do with all the larger varieties.
Dwarf, deciduous shrub, more compact and smaller than 'Crimson Pygmy'. Deep, dark reddish-purple summer foliage gives way to brighter red foliage before falling. Small yellow flowers are followed by bright red fruit in fall.
Deep burgundy red foliage turns somewhat more green in the heat of summer. This is an extremely tidy, compact form of Barberry. One of the most dwarf forms. Like all of this species, produces yellow flowers in spring, bright red, oblong fruit in autumn which is loved by birds. Forms a perfect, tight little mound and in Fall develops a color described by someone as a "screaming scarlet"! 2006 Great Plant Picks from Elisabeth Botanical Garden, a most prestigious award.
