Nursery contributed plant descriptions

There is no more delightful March-flowering shrub! It is commonly called the 'buttercup' winter hazel for its small, graceful, racemes of sweetly-fragrant, primrose-yellow flowers. The blossoms appear on bare branches before the delightful heart-shaped, bright green leaves. This species becomes a compact, spreading, multi-trunked shrub to 4-6'; perfect for the woodland border or understory. PSh/M
One of the finest of all shrubs we grow, it has a grace about it year round. In winter the branches form a lacy effect with dark colored swollen flower buds. In March the light yellow racemes cover the plant.
A favorite deciduous shrub, C. pauciflora is a nice size, 3' T x 4' W. Its airy structure is nevertheless a fairly compact, rounded form, with a dense growth of twigs and small hazel-like leaves held horizontally. The leaves often have a slight, pretty blush. In bloom, before it leafs out, the branches are lined with lovely light yellow flowers - so delicate.Minimum temperature: -10°F
Something wonderful for seasonal brightness in the garden. Creamy yellow, slightly fragrant flowers hang all along each branch giving this woodland plant a delicate appearance. Blooms very early along the same time as the witchhazels. Native to Japan & Taiwan. Growth Rate slow
The beautiful intricate branching of this deciduous shrub fills with primrose-yellow, bell-shaped flowers in drooping clusters in early spring. They glow heart-warmingly in the weak light. The attractive red-edged foliage emerges after flowering. Underplant with Pulmonaria, cyclamen, Ophiopogon, hellebores and Omphalodes.
This choice delicate shrub will grace a woodland garden with the scent and sight of primrose yellow flowers on 3 in. racemes. The bristle-toothed leaves, which cluster densely on gently arching branches, are smaller than others in the genus. Long lasting as a cut flower, Buttercup Winter Hazel is irresistible with an understory of early flowering blue Brunnera.
Of refined, delicate appearance year-long, this woodland shrub from Japan makes a great substitute for witchhazel in smaller gardens. It slowly mounds up, becoming more broad than tall, and is easily maintained. Primrose yellow flowers cover the branches in early spring. Prefers moist, partially shaded borders and open woods, but tolerates a sunny spot fine: it just grows more slowly in full sun.
Covered with small yellow fragrant flowers in late winter, this small dense shrub will spread out to six feet in time and stay less than 4' tall. A must in a winter garden. Zone 7.
A deciduous small to medium size shrub from Japan and Taiwan. A slow growing, restrained, wonderful plant with dark green leaves that turn yellow to golden in Fall. Fragrant buttercup yellow flowers dangle in small chains in very early Spring on slender brown zig-zag stems. A good alternative to the common Forsythia as it's more refined and shapely. The flowers occur along the whole length of the branches. The delicate blooms are followed by equally delicate, strikingly beautiful green leaves, narrowly bordered in spring in reddish-purple. Great Plant Pick - Miller Botanical Garden.
