Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Lustrous green 5-6" long leaves on reddish stalks make this a very handsome (though not very hardy) 10-15' shrub; small flowers are followed by small black fruit on female plants (ours are unsexed seedlings). S-PSh/M
The Chilean Wineberry, or Maqui, is a large shrub or small tree native to the Valdivian rainforests of Chile and adjacent southern Argentina. Typically growing up to 15 feet in height, the Chilean Wineberry will naturally produce numerous thin trunks, creating a unique, lofty appearance. Trees are fast growing, evergreen and cold hardy and make a great addition to both formal gardens and edible landscapes. Being hailed as a so-called ‘super food’, the fruits of the Chilean Wineberry are high in anthocyanins and other antioxidants. While the berries are small, the trees produces them in abundance and they are often used to create juices, jams and wines. This is a rare plant that is hard to find in the nursery trade and our plants in particular are a known self-fertile, productive variety. Cold hardy to USDA zone 8a, or 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
From Chile and Argentina, an unusual evergreen shrub to small tree, to 15-25', for sun to dappled shade in fertile, well-drained soil that is kept moist. Small, white flowers appear in May and purple, edible berries in fall. This form, from Mike Remick is a heavy fruiting form that has proven cold hardy to below 10 °F - USDA zone 8.
