Ever-red, clumping sedge. Slow growing, to 12" tall x 15" wide and best used in the garden in combination with yellow or light green foliaged plants. For full sun to part shade with regular water in summer. Seed heads can get caught in fur -- both animal and people -- and are best removed. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
This toasty-hued New Zealand native is highly treasured for narrow, rich mahogany blades arching up and out from its base to forge a burnished tuft warmed by reddened accents. Tiny, Bulrush-like, hooked flowers are elevated above the tidy, low growing evergreen clump that flourishes in cool moist places but sulks in excessive heat. Massed at water's edge or nestled in a cobalt blue container, Uncinia rubra strikes a stunning pose with Bergenia 'Bressingham Ruby's textural leaves or the rounded foliage of Lysimachia 'Aurea' as a golden counterpoint.
The best little red grass you ever saw! A gorgeous, deepest red-bronzy, clumping grass - well, actually, a sedge, native to New Zealand. Growing to a compact 12” x 15" tall & wide, it is very easy to grow & looks great all of the time. Excellent for adding rich, contrasting color & texture to the front of a bed. Fab & fun in a pot too. Uncinias like a cool, moist habitat. Here along the California coast, we can grow it in full sun to shade. Bright shade to shade inland. It doesn’t like to dry out.
