Among the finest of the cultivated azaleas, this 8-15' shrub is native to Oregon and California. The only azalea native to west of the Rockies, it is found growing along streams and in moist woods. A delight in spring when covered with its delightful, very fragrant, white to pale-pink flowers tinted with pink and yellow (they can be fairly variable in coloring!) Absolutely gorgeous again in fall when the leaves are brilliant shades of orange-red. PSh/M
R. ‘OCCENDTALE’ - is our native southern Oregon and western California native. It grows in seeps along the river. The white flowers have yellow and pink highlights in May. I enjoy the fragrance that is musty and slightly skunky (in a good way). We haven’t ever offered this native before but finally found some seedlings this summer. So, will vary some in flower color.
Our own native western azalea. Found in large thickets in the coast range of Oregon and Northern California, its delicious sweet scent can fill the valleys in spring and summer. The clusters of flowers can range from near white to varying shades of pink and sometimes even red. The western azalea was an early contributor in the development of the Exbury azaleas in England.
An always ornamental deciduous azalea native to the west coast of the USA. This variable species has large showy fragrant flowers in early summer. The color ranges from white to flushed pink, yellow or orange, often with more than one color present. Bright fall foliage color. Best in sun in the Pacific NW. These are grown from hand-pollinated seed produced here in the RSBG.
Pink buds open to off white flowers with an orange blotch, very fragrant. Deciduous shrub up to 8 ft. tall and wide. Note: this choice native of the maritime Pacific Northwest and Northern California does not perform well outside its native region.
Western azalea is a deciduous shrub that usually reaches 2 ft - 5 ft tall in the garden The sight and smell of the Western azalea is a delight to behold. The delicate white bloom is tinged with pink and orange, and can be detected by the the sweet smell, even before you see them. This beautiful, deciduous shrub with elliptical leaves is more garden friendly than other rhododendrons. Sometimes a bit fussy, and slow growing, Western azalea is definitely worth the extra attention. Prefers acidic soil, so add organic matter such as peat moss or compost. Its a wonderful specimen plant and also does well in containers. Native to California and is found only slightly beyond California borders. This azalea may be frequented by honeybees, bumblebees or other smaller native bee species. The Western Azalea was an early contributor in the development of deciduous hybrid azaleas in Great Britain, such as the Exbury azaleas. Found in streambanks, foggy coastal scrub to coast redwood forests as well as in serpentine soils. Communitites located in Wetland-riparian Between 0 and 7500 feet.
