Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This primrose is one of the most improbable in the genus, at least compared to the familiar flower forms. Primula vialii has unique spikes of scarlet red buds that open to lavender flowers. Plants clump quickly and can send up multiple flower spikes. Short-lived for most gardeners though at Dart's Hill Garden a clump has persisted in full sun in moist soil where an underground seep passes by. Try it in summer moisture but good winter drainage. Worth trying for the intrigue and fun.
The pyramidal, Kniphofia-like flowers of this highly unusual Primula are bicolored, with purple at the base and reddish fuchsia at the apex. Perched atop 15 in. stalks and oblong, blunt-tipped green basal foliage, they provide fragrant, fanciful accents either in large drifts or surrounded by Aruncus and Viola 'Rebecca'.
Red / mauve flower spikes. Summer bloomer.
Blooms late spring-summer. Spikes red unopend flowers, purple open flowers. Lance shaped leaves in rosette. Looks spectacular in masses. Zone 5-8. 18", China, part shade-sun, moist, humus rich.
One of the Improbable Primula with cone shaped Flowers of Disbelief! Foxtail Spires of Red Bracts open to Orchid Pink Flowers! Ok, I'll quit - but it does seem like a plant for the Oregon Vortex. Moist conditions are best and this really puts on a show. Divide every 3-4 years.
Beautiful and unusual, 3-6,” conical flower spikes are red in bud with the violet-blue flowers opening from the bottom of the spike working their way up, creating an attractive contrast. May go deciduous, it blooms generally in late Spring. The fresh, green, lance-shaped leaves have round edges and form rosettes. Primula vialii loves part shade and rich, moist, humusy soil that does not dry out. If you do a good job, it should live 3-4 years.
