    Another treasure from the Andes, this evergreen shrublet - to about 3' - produces deep green leaves and way-abundant, burnt orange, pouched flowers from mid-spring through autumn, year round in mild climates. Sun to partial shade; even water. Root hardy with good drainage to the top of USDA zone 7. Reliably evergreen above zone 8. Excellent container plant. Calceolariaceae

    It’s so hard to find a good Calceolaria in these modern times, as so many have been bred into weak, boinky oblivion. This one is strong, tall, & garden worthy! Hooray! Rich red & orange “pocket book flowers” are TOO CUTE, & great in summer bouquets. Given rich soil & semi-regular water, this plant should easily thrive & overwinter. It’s a little frost tender, but it stays evergreen or semi-evergreen in warmer years, & brings warmth & color to the garden all summer long (& sometimes longer). Can be grown as an annual in colder zones & still bloom through the summer months! Growing less than 2’ wide, & up to 4’ tall, it’s suitable in containers & in semi-shady borders.
