?A singularly handsome and striking shrub? (Bean); to 15' with fragrant flowers unique among Buddleias in their yellow-orange color and their arrangement in ball-like heads. S/M
To see it in bloom is to covet this cheerful plant, ours a Cistus collection from the highlands of Argentina. To 6-12 ft tall or so with long, narrow, "woolly" leaves of green-silver-grey and copious, 2" diameter, orange- yellow, puffball flowers.-- fragrant of course. Full sun and well-drained soil with regular water. Frost hardy and deciduous in USDA zone 7; semi-evergreen in upper zone 8 and above.
One year at the VanDusen Garden Show David Tarrant gave a talk by making a bouquet of flowers from around the world. When he revealed a branch of B. globosa the entire crowd released a collective gasp of plant lust. Despite his talk it is still hard to find. This unique butterfly bush has clusters of perfectly spherical tangerine balls in early summer. The leaves are rich green and nicely textured. Native to the southern Andes. Blooms on old wood so trim right after flowering.
Not the hardiest Buddleia but if you're in a warmer zone, it will certainly be the most unusual. With fragrant round, globe shaped blooms (rather than cone shaped like most Buddleias) in 6-8", the color will stun you from yellow orange to orange the average person simply won't know what it is! Large, leathery, dark green leaves with downy undersides are evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on temperatures. Blooms on old wood (unlike most Buddleias so it should be pruned, if necessary after blooming, in late spring ). Provides nectar for spring and early summer Butterflies. Native to the Andes of Chile, Peru, and Argentina.

This species from Chile is the most southerly occurring of the many fabulous South American Buddlejas, and therefore one of the hardiest and best adapted to the Northwest. Growing into a large shrub of 12' (occasionally 20'!) tall and wide, it has huge, soft leaves, and terminal panicles of yellow or orange-yellow flowers in late spring - quite a show! Like many Buddlejas, it has a semi-evergreen habit, and its size can be kept in check by cutting it back hard in early spring. It appreciates full sun and tolerates moist or dry soil. Unlike B. davidii and some of its cultivars, it is not invasive in the Pacific Northwest. Hardy to about 12°F.
Bears clusters of dark yellow-orange balls. Prunes well.
