Sophora prostrata 'Little Baby', commonly known as dwarf or prostrate kowhai, is a small, upright, evergreen shrub prized for its wiry, zig-zag or "divaricated" branching habitat, its adorable, tiny pinnate leaves, and its yellow-orange, beaked, pea-like flowers in fall. A tough plant that tolerates a range of conditions including drought and wind. Potentially hardy in coastal BC but overwintering in a frost-free location is safer. A natural to grow in a container or as a bonsai. Also has potential as a houseplant. Untrimmed, plants will grow to four feet tall and three feet wide. Deer resistant.
Unique and different, this Pagoda Tree relative makes a dense tangled evergreen mound to only 3-5' tall with tiny compound leaves on wire-like stems and interesting beak-like small golden-yellow flowers in fall; exceptionally pretty in containers. S/M-D

A sweet little evergreen shrub with zigzagging wire like stems that weave a mound that grows slowly to 3’; leaves are tiny and silver green; pea flowers (yes, this is in the pea family!) in late spring are yellow-orange. This Lil Baby is really cute and wants to be featured as an adorable specimen in your garden where her subtle self can be admired and appreciated. Well-drained soil, makes its own fertilizer, sun to light shade, moderate watering.
Sophora prostrata ‘Little Baby’, sometimes called Dwarf Kowhai, is an upright, evergreen shrub with wiry, zigzagging branches carrying tiny, adorable leaflets. This New Zealand native bears yellow-orange, beaked pea flowers in fall. You heard that right! This shrub is actually is the pea family. Dwarf Kowhai prefers a well-drained, evenly moist soil that is not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter. The shrub will look best in full sun, either on a southward or westward facing side of the house. ‘Little Baby’ is not tolerant of freezing temperatures, and may need to be overwintered in a frost-free spot.

A smallish shrub from New Zealand with narrow wiry stems growing in a zigzag fashion, bearing pretty leaves with tiny leaflets. Golden orange pea flowers are produced late in the season. Best in full sun, lean soil and not much fertilizer. Most we've seen reach 4' or so in a Rastafarian tangle. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8, possibly into zone 7.
