In our never ending search for garden hardy evergreen Schefflera relatives, here's one that's actually a Schefflera. This Himalayan species grows eventually to 6 or 8 ft and can have leaves in excess of 2 ft with an exquisite tawny indumentum. So far has proven hardier than even Fatsia to a low USDA zone 7!! Dappled shade is best with even moisture.
Umbrella-like compound leaves give a decidedly tropical look to this hardy plant; 6-8' tall & 4-6' wide or more; architectural sprays of small white flwrs fall, AM sun or light shade, good garden soil, regular moisture, from China, collectors must-have!
Only a few available. This large evergreen shrub has fantastic glossy divided leaves. Our plant is now 3’ x 4’and is mostly foliage. Has been hardy here for 5-6 years. Makes a spectacular foliage plant for afternoon shade.
This intriguing shrub or small tree from high elevation areas of China and Vietnam has broad umbrellas of green leaves that emerge covered in silver or copper indumentum. Like most members of the aralia family it blooms in fall. Numerous species from Asia are potentially hardy for us including this one. Schefflera delavayi has been bone hardy in the Pacific Northwest and BC through the armageddon winters of 2008/09 and 2010/2011.
Inciting a hubbub of horticultural intrigue because of its house plant affiliations, this bold tropicalthemed broadleaf evergreen is surprisingly hardy. Low-branching Schefflera delavayi launches wide umbrellas of lobed Oak-shaped new growth cloaked with an alluring fawn-colored fuzz and mature, glossy green compound leaves that can reach a massive 3 ft. across, while long lacy sprays distinguished by petite white flowers make a luminous autumn display. An Aralia family member indigenous to southeastern China and Vietnam's higher regions, the Umbrella Tree needs dappled shade and rich well-drained evenly moist soil to sustain its gallant good looks.
From SE China and Vietnam, garnering a lot of attention because it looks like a large evergreen houseplant, this Schefflera is proving a hardy (z7). With large compound leaves, 3' across, it forms a low-branching shrub ultimately to 15', blossoming in October with tiny, white, fragrant flowers in great long sprays and the new growth is covered in tan indumentum.
