Lovely South American equivalent of the South African amaryllis. Flowers in late summer with deep dusky-red, lily-like blooms on 1 ft stems. Grass-like, strappy leaves follow the flowers. Easy in the garden, in well-drained soil with protection from the very hottest sun. Water in their growing season. Easily grown as a houseplant and encouraged into bloom for the holiday season. Frost hardy with mulch in upper USDA zone 6.
(OXBLOOD LILY) Coinciding with the first rains of autumn, amaryllis-like flowers of deep, rich, blood red appear over narrow deep green leaves; foliage lasts thru winter and goes dormant in spring to re-emerge again summer to fall to repeat that process. 6-12” tall and will offset to make clumps. Long lived bulbs can go on to 100 years! Drought tolerant, deer resistant, enjoys the heat and humidity of the south. Also grows in pots, sun to part shade, average soil, needs moisture during growth and bloom.
Also called hurricane and schoolhouse lilies, these brilliant heirlooms look like short, blood-red amaryllises. Extra tough, they thrive in clay or sand and often mark abandoned homesites. They were introduced from the Andes in 1807 and brought to Texas by German settlers sometime after 1865. By 1881 they were being offered by the Lily Nursery of Jacksonville, Florida. True 'Hill Country Red' heirloom, formerly Amaryllis advena, Habranthus hesperius, and Hippeastrum advenum, 12-18", zones 7a-10b
Oxblood Lilies were introduced to Texas in the late 1800's. Expect stunning displays of flowers in late summer and early fall, followed by winter foliage. Originally from Agentina, this Amaryllis relative is well suited to harsh conditions. Alternating heat, drought, rain, and cold are no problem. This proven heirloom bulb has multiplied and been passed around central Texas for well over a century. They will be at home anywhere in the Southern US, zones 7-10. The bulbs are small size but could bloom next year with a good growing season. The small size is why the price is so low. These are seed grown and will be mixed shades of pink.
A Chilean bulb with striking fall blooming trumpets of blood red on 14" stems. Rhodophiala appreciate a dry resting period from early summer till fall bloom.
