An extremely handsome, evergreen native oak found in western dry country and able to withstand great drought, these from acorns collected in the wild near Cave Junction, Oregon at 4000 ft. Wonderfully adapted to dry summer climates and very successful as a street tree. Fast growing when young and slowing in maturity, these can reach 20-30 ft in your lifteime in deep soil with bright sun to part shade. Frost hardy into at least the single digits, F, low USDA zone 7. Can be shrubby when young so encourage a strong leader.
The small glossy leaves of this unusual oak are variously formed from toothed to entire (sometimes on the same tree) deep-green on top with fuzzy golden undersides which give it the common name of Goldenleaf Oak. Canyon Live Oak is an evergreen shrubby tree that typically grows to 30-60'. Native to dry mountain canyons, it is widely distributed throughout California with populations in Oregon and Mexico. An evergreen Oak native throughout California, the Canyon Live Oak is the hardiest of the Western Live Oak species and is by far one of the best Oaks for bonsai. The leaves are small - usually about an inch long and half an inch wide - and the branches are short and dense. The leaves on seedlings are shaped more like a tiny Holly leaf with slight serrations which reduces browsing by deer. As the trees mature the leaves loose the serrations and develop the rounded form.

Canyon Live Oak trees are very heat and drought tolerant and grow at a medium rate into a large multi-trunk form. They do best in well drained soil without too much summer irrigation.

Extensive range over much of California and Southern Oregon and performs well in over a range of sites, but best near some moisture. The crown is broad and rounded and the evergreen leaves are toothed and flat. A great and adaptable oak.
Canyon live oak makes a spectacular bonsai as well as a good garden specimen in many parts of the countryreaching 100' after 300years or so. Canyon live oak is found in the Coast Ranges and Cascade Range of Oregon and in the Sierra Nevada in California. Realistically it is zone 6-7 but gary has a plant in the arboretum at Gee's.
This small leaved evergreen oak reminds one of English holly with its spiny toothed, shiny, leathery and dark green leaves. It makes a handsome rounded or spreading tree to 20' which in the wild can reach 50'. The bark is scaly and near white in color. The acorn cups are covered with golden fuzz and look like little turbans. Rarely in cultivation.

Our best guess on the species though it is lacking the golden hairs usually present under the leaves. A hybrid with Q. vaccinifolia? Oak ID hurts our heads. Our seed collection on lower Fiddler Mt in the Siskiyous from a perfect evergreen small tree. Heat, deer and drought tolerant.
